Some things JUST make sense, and eating for your blood type is one of them. Go on a trip to the grocery store and allow yourself to take in all of the food alternatives that are now available—gluten-free, lactose-free, dairy-free, plant-based, vegetarian etc.
Ever wonder how this explosion of food alternatives came to be? If you’re anything like me, you may have figured it was all a ploy to drive consumerism, a plot to subconsciously plant sensitivities or allergies in people’s psyches to generate more demand which ultimately increases revenue. Blame it on my marketing background. I’m ever looking for the sales tactic.
It wasn’t until I visited my local vitamin shop, got a blood test, and was indoctrinated in the “do’s and don’ts” for my blood type, that I actually appreciated all of these alternative options.
Knowing Your Body
Let me back up for a second to tell you why I was sold so quickly. I have been on a pretty serious fitness journey for the last six years. Over the course of this time, I’ve learned quite a bit about my body, its likes and dislikes, the timeline and context around aches and pains. I can identify almost instantly things like, decreased hydration, my body alerting me to its need for rest, when I’ve not consumed enough leafy greens, and even if I’m experiencing a magnesium deficiency. I say all of this really, to just toot my own horn a bit about how intimately I know my body.
Using myself as a guinea pig, I did plenty of trial and error over the years to figure out what foods my body responds well to versus not. And guess what, it totally spooked me to see these foods categorized on the sheet as either “Eat Daily” or “Foods to Avoid.” So, things like oranges, strawberries, and kiwi that burned my stomach each time I consumed them…guess where they were? Yep, “Foods to Avoid.”
About My Blood Type
My blood type is O+. Which means I thrive off of high consumption of meat. This was interesting to me because I crave meat the way some people crave sweets. Aside from me being a carnivore (lol), I have a tendency toward greater levels of stomach acid (hence my body’s response to acidic foods like oranges, strawberries, and kiwi). Enzymes made up of alkaline are secreted into my digestive tract at much higher rates than other blood types. This has its advantages and disadvantages. These overactive digestive factors enhance my ability to metabolize cholesterol in meat and increase the ability for my digestive tract to heal and better process calcium. The sucky part is, simple carbohydrates are turned into fats and triglycerides easier which causes fluid retention and inflammation. And boy do I know about this! My stomach becomes bloated instantly when I’ve consumed anything with grain.
Benefits of Eating For Your Blood Type
Eating for my blood type was a no brainer for me. I immediately started incorporating it into my lifestyle and was blown away when I lost 40 lbs in two months. Meanwhile, this wasn’t at all why I chose to adopt it. I really was just desiring to eat optimally for overall wellness. Not only did I shed 40 lbs, I also felt extraordinarily strong and energetic.
I have been a spokesperson for eating for your blood type ever since. I implore you to take some time to figure out your blood type. It’s likely, you’ve already discovered along the way those things your body responds well to versus not. There’s a reason why your body responds the way it does to certain foods. If you have an adverse response, that food likely does not serve your body well. Even if it is something that’s “good for you.” There were a lot of things on my “Foods to Avoid” list that are extremely healthy, yet, they don’t serve me well, such as avocados (this was a tough one), cinnamon, coconuts, cabbage, pistachios, and loads of others. I know the hardest part about adopting diets is their tendency to be so restrictive. I guess there’s really no way around that. It just is, what it is. But I think the reason this diet has been easier for me than others I’ve tried is because I know what the foods on the “Foods to Avoid” list do to me. I can actually see and feel their ill effects.
